Author: Psychological Counseling | How Do Technology and Digital Age Affect Our Mental Well-being?

We live in an era where technology has become an integral part of our lives over recent decades, so it's important to pay attention to its impact on our mental health. While modern technology offers countless advantages, such as easier access to information, the ability to stay constantly connected with loved ones, or increased work efficiency, its excessive use can also have negative consequences. From smartphones and computers to social media – technological progress has changed the way we communicate, work, and live. Although technology mostly brings benefits, its impact on mental health is complex and can also be negative. Constant presence on social networks, pressure for perfection, and the fast pace of the digital world can lead to increased stress, anxiety, and feelings of isolation.

How does technology affect our psyche and mental health?

Technology has a dual effect on our psyche and mental health. It can be both positive and negative. On one hand, technology allows us easier access to information, improves work efficiency, and provides contact with loved ones regardless of location or distance. Additionally, there are various apps and online platforms that offer tools to improve our mental health, such as meditation apps, blogs, or online therapy.

On the other hand, excessive use of technology can lead to negative consequences. Screens, to which we are constantly exposed, especially on social networks, can cause feelings of anxiety, depression, and isolation from the real world. The digital world often creates pressure for perfection, perfectionism, and constant comparison with others, which can negatively affect self-esteem and confidence, particularly among adolescents. Additionally, it interferes with real-life experiences, leading to a lack of personal contact. Excessive use of technology can also worsen the quality of sleep and overall physical and mental well-being.

Negative Effects of Technology on Mental Health

Here are some negative impacts of technology on our mental health:

  • Addiction to Technology – Excessive use of technology, such as smartphones and social media, leads to addiction. Generation Z (ages 13-24) has the highest rate of smartphone and app addiction. Members of Generation Z spend an average of 6 hours and 37 minutes per day on their smartphones. Such addiction negatively affects social relationships, productivity, and overall quality of life among young people.

  • Social Isolation – Paradoxically, even though technology enables communication with anyone, anywhere, it also contributes to social isolation. People may prefer virtual communication over face-to-face meetings, which can lead to loneliness and reduced social skills. Digital communication often cannot replace the deep and authentic relationships we form in the real world.

  • Physical Health – A sedentary lifestyle associated with excessive use of technology can lead to physical health issues, such as back pain, obesity, and deterioration of overall fitness, which can ultimately affect mental health as well.

  • Disrupted Sleep – Technology negatively impacts physical health and also affects the quality of our sleep. Using electronic devices before bed significantly worsens sleep. Screens from smartphones or laptops emit blue light, which inhibits the production of melatonin, the hormone responsible for regulating sleep, leading to insomnia and other sleep disorders. Using technology before bed is something we should definitely avoid.

  • Increased Anxiety and Stress – Incoming notifications and pressure for immediate responses can contribute to chronic stress and anxiety. The feeling that we must always be available disrupts our ability to relax and rest.

  • Disruption of Attention and Concentration – Constant interruptions from notifications while performing a task lead to decreased ability to focus and complete that task. Such disruptions can negatively impact productivity and cognitive abilities.

How Can I Minimize the Negative Effects of Technology Use?

To minimize the negative impacts of technology on mental health, it is important to implement certain strategies:

  • Set Time Limits – Setting time limits for using electronic devices, social media, or any other technology can help reduce the risk of addiction and promote a healthy balance between online and offline worlds and activities.

  • Mindful Technology Use – Be aware of how and why you use technology. Consider whether you pulled out your phone because you needed to make a call or just because you were bored. Focus on positive interactions and avoid negative comparisons. Try to follow accounts and pages that inspire and support you.

  • Digital Detox – Take regular breaks from technology, known as "digital detoxes." These breaks help improve mental well-being. You might plan days or hours without technology to focus on other activities and thereby improve your sleep quality.

  • Use Technology for Mental Health – Leverage the positive aspects of technology by using apps and tools aimed at improving mental health, such as meditation apps, relaxation tools, or stress management resources.

The Positive Aspects of Technology on Mental Health

In conclusion, technology should not be viewed only as something with negative effects. On the contrary, it can have positive impacts, including on our mental health in many ways.

  • Access to Information – The internet provides unlimited access to information and educational resources. People can easily find necessary information about mental health, symptoms, and treatment methods, which can increase awareness and support self-care.

  • Online Support and Communities – Social media and online forums offer platforms where people can share experiences and receive support from others going through similar issues, as well as valuable advice. Such communities can be sources of emotional support and assistance. It's not just about emotional support; online forums also offer various help resources. For example, you can find excellent recipes, DIY tutorials (which boost creativity and skills), exercise routines (for relaxation, health, and a healthy lifestyle), or even music you enjoy.

  • Telemedicine – Technology allows access to healthcare through telemedicine. Patients can consult with specialists and therapists online, which is especially useful for people living in remote areas or with limited mobility. This also applies to consultations with doctors and specialists for both mental and physical health.

  • Mental Health Apps – Many apps help with stress management and meditation, easily available for any smartphone. These apps can provide tools and techniques for improving mental health and overall well-being.

Overall, technology has a significant impact on us. While it can enhance access to information, support online communities, and enable telemedicine, it can also lead to addiction, social isolation, negative comparisons, or disrupted sleep. The key is to find a balance between using technology and caring for ourselves and our mental health so we can fully benefit from its advantages while minimizing potential risks. In moderation, technology is essential and beneficial for people and humanity. However, it is important to remember that too much of anything is harmful. Remember, technology should be a tool that helps us, not one that controls us.
